PASTORAL CARE AND VISITATION

Contacting The Church

The Church is here to share in good times and bad.  Please call the office with birth announcements, prayer requests, hospital admissions and discharges, or with any other information that would allow us to show care and Christian love. Church Office: (412) 963-8243.

a team ministry

Our congregational care ministry works from a team model. This team consists of the pastoral staff and seminary intern, other members of our church’s staff, deacons, parish care leaders, Stephen Ministers, and other lay volunteers in a variety of caring activities.  The Associate Pastors, Joan Hogge and Lee Nichols coordinate this ministry.

Our goal is to have an overlapping system of care involving many people in a variety of functions. The names and contact information for the members of our care team are as follows. The church phone number is 412-963-8243, with extensions listed for church staff.

Doug Bradbury, Director of Family Ministries, ext. 25
Carol Haeussner, Stephen Ministry Placement Coordinator
Joan Hogge, Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care, ext. 19
Lee Nichols, Associate Pastor for Congregational Care, ext. 20
Chris Taylor, Senior Pastor, ext. 17
Alison Francis, Moderator of the Board of Deacons
Penny Young, Administrative Assistant to the Pastors, ext. 41

PASTORAL CARE IN TIMES OF DIFFICULTY AND CRISIS

In times of difficulty and crisis contact any of our pastors. Notify the church immediately if there is an emergency. If the office is closed, the telephone message will provide an emergency number. After receiving your message, one of the pastors will contact you as soon as possible.

HOSPITAL MINISTRY

The healing work of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels is the inspiration for those who serve in this ministry.  Hospital visits are made by the pastors, the seminary intern and Stephen Ministers. These visit and pray with members and friends.

Please call the church office to keep us informed of admissions, surgeries, discharges and any special needs. Hospitals no longer inform churches of these and so we rely upon you to let us know. Confidentiality and privacy concerns are honored as requested.

VISITING THE HOMEBOUND AND THOSE IN CARE FACILITIES

Pastors are available to visit the homebound and those in a variety of care facilities—nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, hospice care, assisted living, etc. Pastoral visits may be scheduled upon request. Communion can be taken.  Please let us know what would be helpful and appropriate.  Stephen Ministry is our primary tool to maintain caring contact over an extended period of time. Because of their other responsibilities, our pastors are limited in this regard.  You may request a Stephen Minister for yourself or a loved one who would benefit from continuing and regular contact from the church by contacting Lee Nichols or Carol Haeussner.

SUPPORT AND OUTREACH MINISTRIES

Prayer

Our church carries on an active ministry of prayer and we invite you to join your prayers with those of many other faithful ones as we raise our joys and concerns to the Lord. If you have a prayer request for yourself or a friend, do not hesitate to contact the church office. The information will be forwarded to the Prayer Ministry and published on our Prayer Concern List. The Prayer Concern List is distributed through daily e mail and printed for Sunday mornings. We list names of hospitalized members unless  instructed otherwise.  We ask that prayer requests be renewed on a monthly basis. In deference to confidentiality, if you submit a name for the prayer list, please ask their consent beforehand.

The Board of Deacons

Our Board of Deacons is involved in a number of caring ministries both to members of the church and to the larger community.  Deacons prepare letters of care and concern that are signed by the congregation on Sunday mornings. They provide rides for members to worship on Sunday mornings. Deacons provide meals for those in crisis and provide receptions following funerals or memorial services.  Deacons plan a semi-annual blood drive, collect donated food for distribution to local pantries, supply Christmas gifts to needy families, provide meals for Ronald McDonald House, and engage in many other meaningful outreach ministries.  The Moderator of our Board of Deacons is Alison Francis.

Parish Care Ministry

Our Parish Care Ministry provides support for members of the congregation through volunteer Parish Leaders. Leaders act as the hands of the church to reach out to members in their neighborhood to provide and receive information, offer care and concern, and assist individuals and families as they become involved in the church and grow in their discipleship.  Contact the church office for more information; e-mail: parishcare@fcpc.us.

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministers walk with people through times of trouble. They are trained to be a caring friend and provide a listening ear to those going through difficult experiences. Those trained as Stephen Ministers go through a fifty-hour training program. Confidentiality, supervision and continuing education are important ingredients.

Stephen Ministers multiply the pastoral ministry of our church by visiting on a more regular basis than our pastors can. If you are in need of a Stephen Minister or would like to become a Stephen Minister contact Lee Nichols or Carol Haeussner.

Counseling

Our church serves as a satellite location for Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute (PPI), to provide professional and confidential counseling to members and to the local community. Counseling is available for all individuals, couples and families facing various degrees of need related to marriage, family, grief, relationships, life transitions, as well as other life crises or difficulties. The mission of PPI is to enhance the health of individuals, families and communities through an ecumenical ministry of healing and education that integrates the resources of faith and the behavioral sciences. Costs of services are covered by most major insurance companies. Some financial assistance is available through PPI in cases of hardship or lack of insurance. For more information or to make an appointment with the counselor, contact the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute at 412-661-1239.

Helping Hands - Healing Hearts

Helping Hands-Healing Hearts (HH-HH) is a volunteer organization formed in 2004 as the Jubilee Mission Project of FCPC, to promote quality palliative and hospice care for children with life-threatening conditions.  Through education, information and volunteerism, our goal is to enable families and health care professionals to provide the best possible quality of life for very ill children and their families throughout the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Contact Joan Hogge.

Marriage and Family Ministries

TWOgether Pittsburgh

Our congregation is a member of the TWOgether Pittsburgh Coalition, seeking to strengthen marriages and families in our community and throughout the metropolitan area.  Through a Healthy Marriage Initiative grant administered by Family Guidance of Pittsburgh, we are committed to offering programming in the following areas: preparing couples for marriage, enriching existing marriages, mentoring married couples, helping couples with children develop effective parenting skills, and reducing the incidence of divorce. Planning Your Wedding at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church

It is our prayer that each and every marriage gives honor to God. This hope is founded on the belief that marriage is a special and unique gift from a loving God who desires to be at the heart of the relationship between a husband and a wife and who desires them to grow in love for God and one another.

If you would like to explore the possibility of having your wedding at the church or performed by one of the pastors off-site, contact the church office. We will provide an informational booklet with guidelines and a wedding application form.  These are also available on the church’s web site. Marriage is one of God’s greatest blessings. Our sincere desire is that weddings performed at Fox Chapel will be a wonderful experience and a great launch into the joys and challenges of Christian marriage.

Marriage Preparation

Our pastors provide pre-marital counseling for all couples they wed. These sessions allow for the bride, groom, and pastor to get to know one another; for counseling related to spiritual, emotional, and inter-personal issues; and for planning the wedding service. The PREPARE/ENRICH couple assessment program and other tools that may be deemed helpful are used as part of our pre-marital ministry.

Marriage Enrichment

We are committed to the ministry of building strong and healthy marriages and families. This church and its pastors will continue to be available to you for consultation and support as your life as husband and wife unfolds.  Marriage enrichment classes are frequently scheduled during the church school hour on Sunday mornings and at other times during the week.

Assistance in Times of Trouble

Pastors are available for short term marriage counseling. When the need is greater, pastors are prepared to recommend a professional counselor.

Baptism Click Here for More information

Baptism is a sign of grace, a symbol of God’s love for us throughout our lives. It is also a sign of entry into the church, the community of God’s  people.  Adults who wish to make an affirmation of faith in Christ may  be baptized and received into membership in the church.  Our Book of  Order requires at least one of the parents of infants and children baptized in the church to be an active member of a Christian congregation. If the current church is not Fox Chapel Presbyterian, we will need special permission from the church of which you are a member.

Normally baptisms are held in public worship on the third Sunday of each month. To schedule a baptism, contact the church office at least six weeks prior to the event. Our expectation is that parents who have their children baptized in this church will encourage their sons and daughters to grow in the faith by attending worship and church school and by working to create a Christian home environment.

affecting our community and world.
